The brothers Manaki: The Balkan painters of the light
Igor Stardelov, North Macedonia Cinematheque's Head of Film Archive
The conversation with researcher Igor Stardelov shed light on the life and work of the Manaki brothers, Janaki and Milton, from their birthplace in the village of Avdela in Epirus, their relocation to Janina and later to Monastir. It covered the Bucharest exhibition in 1906, where they were honored with gold medals, and their journeys to Vienna, Paris and London to purchase their first camera, the Bioscope 300.
Stardelov also addressed the digital and analog restoration of the Manaki films at the North Macedonia Cinematheque, where he holds the position of the head of the department for the preservation of audiovisual materials. Today, their photographic and cinematographic work is part of the cultural heritage of the Balkans, Europe and the world.
The talk was part of the program of European Cultural Heritage Days dedicated to the exhibition and work of the Manaki Brothers.
